Background of the Study

Traditional leaders have long played a critical role in peacebuilding efforts across Nigeria, especially in ethnically diverse regions where tensions often arise between various groups (Olufemi & Akinwale, 2023). In Bassa LGA, Plateau State, where inter-ethnic conflicts have plagued the area, traditional rulers have become central figures in efforts to mediate disputes and promote reconciliation between competing ethnic groups (Yusuf & Bukar, 2024). The role of traditional leaders in peacebuilding extends beyond mere mediation; they often act as custodians of cultural values, trusted by their communities, and seen as legitimate sources of authority (Dikko & Nuhu, 2023). This study aims to assess the influence of traditional leaders in facilitating peacebuilding processes in Bassa LGA, with a focus on their role in inter-ethnic mediation, resolving conflicts, and fostering social cohesion.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While traditional leaders are acknowledged as crucial figures in conflict resolution, the effectiveness of their mediation efforts, especially in areas plagued by ethnic tensions like Bassa LGA, has been questioned (Ali & Titi, 2023). Despite their involvement in numerous peace initiatives, some argue that traditional leaders face significant challenges in bridging deep-rooted ethnic divisions (Musa & Ibrahim, 2024). This study explores the extent to which traditional leadership can influence peacebuilding outcomes in Bassa LGA and whether their efforts have led to long-term stability or have been undermined by political and ethnic dynamics.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of traditional leaders in mediating inter-ethnic conflicts in Bassa LGA, Plateau State.

  2. To examine the impact of traditional leadership on social cohesion and peacebuilding efforts in Bassa LGA.

  3. To evaluate the challenges faced by traditional leaders in the peacebuilding process in Bassa LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What role do traditional leaders play in mediating inter-ethnic conflicts in Bassa LGA?

  2. How have traditional leaders contributed to social cohesion and peacebuilding in Bassa LGA?

  3. What challenges do traditional leaders face in facilitating peacebuilding and resolving ethnic conflicts in Bassa LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Traditional leaders in Bassa LGA significantly contribute to resolving inter-ethnic conflicts through mediation and dialogue.

  2. The peacebuilding efforts led by traditional leaders have a positive impact on social cohesion in Bassa LGA.

  3. Traditional leaders in Bassa LGA face significant challenges that hinder their ability to effectively mediate inter-ethnic conflicts.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it highlights the critical role of traditional leadership in peacebuilding, especially in conflict-ridden regions. It provides insights into how traditional authorities can facilitate dialogue and resolve disputes in multi-ethnic settings, offering lessons for other areas in Nigeria facing similar challenges. The findings will inform policymakers, traditional rulers, and conflict resolution practitioners seeking to enhance peacebuilding efforts at the grassroots level.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This research focuses on traditional leaders’ involvement in inter-ethnic mediation within Bassa LGA, Plateau State. The study is limited to the analysis of traditional leadership and does not address broader political or military interventions in conflict resolution.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Traditional Leaders: Community elders, chiefs, or religious leaders who hold cultural, social, and political influence within a specific ethnic group or region.

  • Inter-ethnic Mediation: The process of resolving disputes between different ethnic groups, often with the goal of fostering peaceful coexistence and cooperation.
